DTF Printing VS Screen Printing

DTF printing vs Screen printing which is better

To determine whether DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing or screen printing is better, you must consider the specific needs of your project, such as quantity, design complexity, fabric type, and budget.

DTF Printing is best for

Small to medium-sized orders, full-color or photorealistic designs, and complex graphics with fine details.

Screen Printing is best for

Large bulk orders with simple, bold designs and a limited number of colors.

DTF Printing Quality and Cost

Lower setup costs, making it economical for small runs or one-off items. The per-piece cost does not decrease significantly with higher volume.

Screen Printing Quality and Cost

Higher initial setup costs for creating screens. However, the cost per item becomes much cheaper for large orders

DTF Design Complexity

Excels at complex, multi-colored designs, gradients, and intricate details since it is a digital process and prints all colors simultaneously.

Screen Printing Design Complexity

More suitable for simpler graphics with limited colors. Each color requires a separate screen, which increases cost and production time for complex designs.

DTF Printing Versatility

Extremely versatile, working well on a wide range of fabrics, including cotton, polyester, blends, nylon, and leather. It is also effective on both light and dark garments.

Screen Printing Versatility

Best suited for cotton and certain synthetics. Achieving vibrant colors on dark fabrics requires a white underbase, which can make the print feel thicker.

DTF Print Feel

Creates a softer, smoother, and thinner feel on the garment. The rubbery feel often softens after a few washes.

Screen Print Feel

Has a thicker, slightly raised, and more textured feel on the fabric, especially on dark garments where multiple layers of ink are used.

DTF Printing Durability

Offers high durability, with quality prints lasting for many washes without cracking or fading. The transfer's longevity depends heavily on the quality of the ink, film, and application.

Screen Printing Durability

Is traditionally more durable and long-lasting because the ink is absorbed directly into the fabric. However, thick ink layers can crack over time.

DTF Printing Production Speed

Faster turnaround for small and medium-sized orders due to minimal setup time and the ability to print all colors in one pass.

Screen Printing Production Speed

The setup process, which includes creating and drying screens for each color, is time-consuming. However, once set up, it is very fast for high-volume runs.

How to decide which method is right for you
  • Choose DTF printing if:
    • You need to print a low quantity of items, including single, custom pieces.
    • Your design has many colors, gradients, or intricate details, like a photograph.
    • You are printing on a variety of different fabrics, especially non-cotton materials.
  • Choose screen printing if:
    • You are printing a large, bulk order of items with the same design.
    • Your design is simple, uses only one or two colors, and does not require fine detail.
    • You want the highest possible durability and a classic, textured print feel
